On February 23rd, the cast of the musical all arrived in Nagpur of India, receiving a warm welcome from the institute.
The Nagarjuna Institue was founded in 1994; it opens the gate for people in new India who hope to create a world of liberty, equality and universal love. This organization offers free learning opportunities with board and teaches this Buddhism and social behavior as well as spread the knowledge to people around them. The school is equipped with libraries, computer rooms, auditorium and a golden strolling Buddha, which is 36 feet tall. It goes without saying that material backup is important, but education is the key to make learners enlightened because such kind of learning can help them and their children feel released from mental pains.
The Nagarjuna Institute has a long history with China. It received support and help from many disciples of Master Nan Huaijin, one of whom is an academician of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and the president of Southern University of Science and Technoloy (SUST),the former president of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Mr. Zhu Qingshi. Mr. You Xiangzhou and Ven. Kuang Shin have also offered considerable support to the construction of the monastery.
The president of Nagarjuna Institute, lay Buddhist Shiyou is a British, who has been living in India for four decades and dedicating to helping unprivileged people. He said that the reason he came to India to help people who are struggling at the grass-root level is to act under orders from his master Senghu. The latter used to practice Buddhism in a cloister for many years and try his best to help beginners. Later, the master returned to the UK to facilitate the development of Buddhism there.
As we all know, Buddhism originated in India and spread to many other countries, especially China in the Tang Dynasty. However, during the twelfth and thirteenth century, for the reasons of the introduction of other religions, the destruction of Buddhist disciplines and ceremonies as well as the constant intrusions from alien armies, local Buddhism came to an end in India. It was not until the October of 1956 that 500,000 people got converted to Buddhism in Nagpur under the leadership of Doctor Babasaheb Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. Thereafter, Buddhism which has been practiced in many other countries returned to India again.
It is evident that Buddhism is not the superstitious “omnipotent theory”, but the truth based on “dependent origination and karmic forces” as well as the fleetness of “existence, duration, degeneration and nonexistence”. The noble prince ---- Siddhartha Gautama gave up his throne to seek the method of putting an end to the pains in life and he succeeded in proving the truth of all the phenomena in the world and removing all the ignorant worries to attain perfect Buddha status. He came to the understanding that all the beings have the wisdom of a Buddha and they can become one. Therefore, he mercifully taught the methods of attaining enlightenment to all those destined ones without any reservation. It can be seen that Buddhism promotes equality without comparison, beyond borders, races, time and space.
With a gap of 2500 years, the Chan and Tea Musical, which inherited the brilliant Chinese Chan and Tea Culture, imbued with the essence of the Chan sect of Buddhism, combining key artistic elements from traditional Chinese culture and modern ones, puts on a performance at the site of Buddhism origin, which will become a new chapter of Buddhist cultural exchange between India and China.
